This week marks five years since Britain officially exited the European Union. On January 31, 2020, the UK made history by becoming the only member state to leave the economic bloc following a referendum held in 2016. The process began when former Prime Minister David Cameron set a date for the referendum in February 2016. What followed was a period of intense campaigning from both pro-EU and anti-EU groups until the nation went to the polls in the referendum on June 23 of that year.
The main talking points of the referendum centered around key issues such as the economy, immigration, sovereignty, border and water controls, as well as security and trade deals for the UK. In total, 33,577,342 votes were cast, with 52% voting to leave the EU and 48% opting to remain. The negotiations regarding the UK's exit from the union have brought about some new rules for members of the public and businesses from the UK. These include new border checks, such as safety checks and customs declarations, some new restrictions on specific UK animal food products, restrictions on the free movement of UK citizens within the EU, and the requirement for UK nationals to obtain a visa for stays longer than 90 days in the EU.
