Australia’s education system is a major drag on productivity, says the BCA, but it doesn’t need to be.
, confused responsibilities between the states and federal government and a lack of market information are undermining responsiveness to industry needs, the Business Council of Australia says.
It says universal access to high-quality childcare, a school system that doesn’t let students fall between the cracks and revamped tertiary education system that makes lifetime access to training and education easier areToo many children enter school already behind in critical developmental areas such as language and cognitive skills, which is only amplified in a school sector that is failing to remediate low levels of literacy and numeracy, the report says.
A survey undertaken for the BCA report found that 72 per cent of people had not been offered any training or professional development by their employer in the past two years. For those who had, people under the age of 35 were twice as likely to have received an offer than older people.
