The SES has responded to nine calls for flood-related incidents and sixteen calls for building damage. Volunteers are anticipating more calls for help and urged Victorians to exercise caution.

Melbourne has been covered in a cloud of darkness as a thunderstorm moves across the city, with the weather bureau warning of flash flooding and winds across Melbourne and some parts of Victoria.

The storm began in Melton, in Melbourne’s west, in the early morning before hitting the city around 8.30am.It moved to the eastern suburbs and the south-west of Victoria between Colac, Ballarat and Hamilton by 9.30am. Twenty-one millimetres of rain was recorded in Anakie, near Geelong, just before 8am, the Bureau of Meteorology said.have pretty much moved over the western and central parts of Melbourne. It will start tracking east and in these conditions, with heavier falls, flash flooding will be likely.Cherny urged motorists to avoid driving in flooded areas.“Just concentrate while being on the road and avoid dangerous hazards, such as damaged roads or any kind of floodwater,” she said.

The SES has responded to nine calls for flood-related incidents and sixteen calls for building damage in Moorabbin, Footscray, Werribee, Heidelberg, Sandringham and Hawthorn.“We do expect more calls for assistance,” said SES spokesperson David Murphy.The thunderstorm also caused flight disruptions at Melbourne airport, with some international and domestic flights being delayed for up to 30 minutes.
