Hantavirus outbreak live: Flight attendent hospitalised as cases rise

Some 19 British nationals were listed as passengers on the MV Hondius, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde , with four British crew members.

A Dutch flight attendent who came into contact with a woman who died of hantavirus has now been taken to hospital. The individual ‌was a flight attendant at Dutch airline KLM, who ⁠had been ​in contact ​with ​a woman who was taken off the flight and later ⁠died in a hospital in Johannesburg.

The infected victim, part of a Dutch couple, both aged 69 – may have contracted it during a bird-watching outing in Ushuaia, the southermost city in the world in Argentina. The couple visited a landfill site during the trip where they may have been exposed to rodents carrying the infection.

British passengers on board a hantavirus-hit cruise ship will be asked to self-isolate in the UK for 45 days on their return.
