Travellers with an eye on Australia this winter might blink in disbelief at flight prices ✈️

According to Mr Penny, “many airlines are still experiencing somewhat of a ‘capacity crunch’, causing the price of airline tickets to specific destinations, such as Australia, to soar as demand continues to increase.”

He points out that before Covid, capacity was at its peak, meaning that airlines “operated every type of aircraft they had, with a full schedule of flights every day”. Fierce competition meant that airlines were forced to cut the cost of their flight prices. This month, airline capacity for international flights to Australia is forecasted to be at only 59 per cent compared to October 2019. “Many airlines, such as Etihad, are continuing to wait before reintroducing aircraft that they had parked during the pandemic,” Mr Penny tells. He adds that Etihad’s focus on sustainability means that the airline has chosen to fly twin-engine aircraft, which carry considerably fewer passengers and are more fuel efficient than four-engine A380s.

He says that a travel agent, rather than a website, will give greater visibility of these special fares and that “being super flexible on dates, routings, potential stopovers for a night or two, could help to keep prices considerably lower”. And as more Asian countries reopen from Covid restrictions, there could be more capacity increases over the coming months, which could help bring prices back down.
