Close to 50 flights have been cancelled as Sydneysiders battle gusty wind conditions that are set to continue for several days.

Close to 50 flights have been cancelled amid blustery conditions delivering wind gusts of up to 52km/h.

Forty-nine domestic flights scheduled for Monday have been cancelled at Sydney Airport since 6am. The north-south runway was closed by Airservices Australia late on Sunday evening, but reopened at 11.30am on Monday. A marine gale warning is in place for Sydney’s enclosed waters, and the city’s coast is under a strong force wind warning, compounded by a hazardous surf warning for much of the state’s coast.A “fairly deep low-pressure system” off the coast is driving the swells and gusts, said the Bureau of Meteorology’s Helen Reid.

In the state’s alpine region, Thredbo recorded lows of minus four degrees in the early hours of Monday.“Morning temperatures will stay quite cold. It won’t be super cold in the day, but the winds will make it colder.
