Hapless tourists face fines of over £2,000 if they embark on one of Italy’s most famous walks wearing inappropriate footwear.

However, mountain rescue teams are fed-up of rescuing visitors who turn up wearing flip-flops, pumps and sandals.They say they have even had to come to the aid of people attempting the route with pushchairs and an elderly man who attempted the hike despite having a leg in plaster. Those who flout the advice will face fines of between 50 and 2,500 euros, depending on the level of assistance they end up needing.The Cinque Terre – which translates as Five Lands – has rocketed in popularity over recent years, especially after an influx of cruise ships to the area.
