Eight flood alerts have been issued for parts of Shropshire due to heavy rainfall and melting snow. River levels are rising, prompting safety closures in Shrewsbury. The Environment Agency is closely monitoring the situation and advises residents to avoid low-lying areas.

Eight flood alerts are in place for parts of Shropshire as a result of the recent rainfall and melting snow.A spokesperson for Shropshire Council said:River levels are rising again in Shrewsbury this afternoon (Tues 7 January). For safety reasons, we are closing Gravel Hill Lane and Sydney Avenue. Please stay safe and don't enter flood water.

The alerts cover Lower and Upper Teme, River Dee catchment from Whitchurch to Chester, River Lugg north of Leominster, River Severn, River Worfe, Severn Vyrnwy confluence and the Tern and Perry catchments. In the county town at 4pm on Tuesday, the Severn had reached 2.8m - slightly above the top of the normal range at 2.7m. The river was expected to reach its peak of just below 3m in the late evening.Down the Severn in Buildwas, the river is expected to reach around 4.4m overnight on Tuesday. A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said:No significant rainfall is forecast over the next 24 hours. We expect river levels to remain high over the next few days. We are closely monitoring the situation. Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses and plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded
