Residents in parts of South Northamptonshire are being warned of potential flooding on roads and in houses today
after persistent heavy rainfall yesterday caused the River Tove to rise this morning.
The Gov.uk website published the warning at just after 7am this morning, saying levels have risen at the Cappenham river gauge in Towcester. Flooding is believed to be affecting the River Tove from Towcester to Cosgrove, including Silverstone Brook. Normal water levels on the river rarely rise above 0.58m, but the latest reading shows the level is currently almost twice that, at 1.09m. Experts are warning the flood storage reservoir in Towcester may start to fill with water if conditions worsen.The warning released by the government said "flooding of property/roads and farmland is possible today".
A spokesperson said: "We are closely monitoring the situation. Our incident response staff are checking defences. Please avoid contact with flood water. This message will be updated this afternoon 10/03/2023, or as the situation changes." The highest ever water reading at Cappenham was 2.06m in April 1998, during the notorious Easter Floods. The unusually wet spring that year led to thousands of homes being flooded out across West Northamptonshire. The Environment Agency was criticized for its response and improvements to flood defences were made.READ NEXT:
