This is the first year Peter Gadd won't have a harvest on parts of his farmland land due to persistent floodingA farmer who has seen parts of his land underwater since October has said a new fund to compensate farmers for damage caused by flooding from Storm Henk is a “shambles”.“It is unprecedented. I haven’t seen anything as bad as this in the whole of my farming career. I have never seen as much damage caused by continual wet weather and flooding.
“I am nowhere near the River Trent. We sit alongside the Grantham Canal, which is disused but still carries water towards the Trent. “There will be a huge downturn in harvest production overall in this country — and some farmers really won’t have much harvest at all. The 63-year-old also warns that poor harvests are likely to hit consumers down the line as a result of flood damage.“The industry is absolutely on its knees at the moment and I do not think this government quite understands the seriousness of what is coming down the track.”
