ALP National Secretary Paul Erickson has told the party to focus on the cost of living because “this is where people expect you to be”.
Labor MPs have been told to focus their attention on the cost of living or risk an electoral backlash, as the government battles the fallout from rising interest rates and energy prices.
With the prime minister’s push for an Indigenous Voice to parliament also dominating political discourse, Mr Erickson said only if voters were assured that the cost of living was the government’s prime concern, would they give it scope to deal with other issues. He emphasised the importance of stressing the relief measures the government has already legislated such as cheaper prescription medicines, cheaper childcare and fee-free TAFE courses.
“The reality is that hopefully inflation is coming down anyway. So, for some of the commentators out there who are pushing for more interest rate rises, this is real people who are getting affected very painfully by increased mortgages.”
