The firm has been fined £300,000 after 'fundamental and multiple' failings were uncovered
A Colwick firm has been hit with with a huge £300,000 fine after a shocking and dramatic explosion threw staff into the air and left them with life-changing injuries. One worker's leg was amputated following the blast at the Bio Dynamic Limited premises at Colwick Industrial Estate on September 20, 2017.
Tomasz Patek was flung out of the tall platform he was working from and landed on the ground in the slurry around the tank. He was hospitalised for two months with serious injuries to his back, head and torso and he was not able to work for more than two years. Colleague Robert Tyrko was also thrown into the air and landed back in the basket of the heightened platform. Mr Tyrko’s leg was amputated and he remains wheelchair bound while waiting for a prosthesis to be fitted.
A joint investigation by the Health and Safety Executive and the Environment Agency found that the company had failed to ensure the health and safety of its employees and others nearby. The company had kept and treated waste in a manner likely to cause pollution to the environment.
