Prescot Cables FC is steeped in history and much loved in its community
A Merseyside football club that is 'on the up' has been at the heart of its town and welcoming generations of fans for 140 years.
Richard, 41, told the ECHO: "We know that the club has been around Prescot since 1884. We've not always played on Hope Street, we moved to the current site where we are now around 100 years ago. British Insulated Callender’s Cables was at one point one of the largest cable factories in the world and the biggest employer in the area, welcoming thousands of workers from Prescot and beyond. The town is also known for its historic buildings, Elizabethan heritage and watchmaking legacy, but through the decades, Prescot Cables F.C. has also become a strong part of the areas identity.
A "family-orientated club," Richard said every looks out for one another as a "Cables family." Pre-lockdown, attendance averaged at around 350 people, but has since double to over 700 people, something Richard said wouldn't be possible without the dedication of matchday volunteers and all the work that goes on from behind the scenes.
"We won the County Cup in 2016/17. We have a fantastic management team in Steven Daley and Peter Cumisky. It’s hard work but it’s great to be a part of." Steeped in history, Richard said the team hope to carry on the legacy of Prescot Cables for generations to come. He told the ECHO: "The team are doing well, they're getting some great attendances and getting a lot of people in. I remember going there is a kid with my dad and you’d get 200 people in - I think now they get an average of 700 people - it’s great for them.
