The European Space Agency is monitoring a potentially hazardous asteroid, 2024 YR4, that has a small but significant chance of impacting Earth in December 2032.
The European Space Agency ( ESA ) is closely monitoring an asteroid the size of a football pitch that could potentially collide with Earth in a little over seven years. The asteroid, designated 2024 YR4 , has an estimated 1 in 83 chance of a direct impact, which according to ESA , could result in 'severe damage to a local region'. Measuring 100 meters by 40 meters, the space rock is currently located approximately 27 million miles from Earth and moving away from the planet.
However, its trajectory is projected to intersect Earth's orbit on December 22, 2032. While a direct impact is unlikely, the asteroid is predicted to pass within a few thousand miles of Earth, constituting a near miss. The Space Mission Planning Advisory Group, led by ESA, will convene in Vienna next week to discuss the latest observations of the asteroid. If the impact risk is confirmed, the group will provide official recommendations to the United Nations and initiate work on potential 'spacecraft-based responses to the potential hazard', as stated in an ESA announcement. Dr. Simeon Barber, a space scientist at the Open University, commented on the situation, stating that 'We shouldn't be overly worried - at least not just yet.' He explained that early detection systems often overestimate the likelihood of an impact with Earth. In the initial stages, determining the asteroid's trajectory with precision is challenging, necessitating a consideration of uncertainty when calculating the probability of impact. Dr. Barber believes that as our technologies for detecting Earth-bound objects advance, we may encounter an increasing number of such alerts. He emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between treating the threat seriously and avoiding overreactions in the early stages of discovery when the trajectory remains poorly defined.Just over two years ago, NASA successfully changed the orbit of the 160-meter-wide asteroid Dimorphos by smashing a spacecraft into it. At the time, NASA administrator Bill Nelson remarked, 'All of us have a responsibility to protect our home planet. After all, it's the only one we have.' Near-Earth Asteroid 2024 YR4 was initially detected by a telescope in Chile. Since the beginning of January, astronomers have been tracking the asteroid to assess its size and movement. The asteroid is anticipated to become less visible within the next few months as it moves further away from Earth. More powerful telescopes will be deployed to gather as much data as possible on its trajectory. Once it disappears from view, it won't reappear until 2028. The potential impact of such an event is significant. While an asteroid of that size directly striking Earth is a rare occurrence, happening only once every few thousand years, the 1908 explosion of a slightly smaller asteroid, estimated to be 60 meters across, over Siberia serves as a stark reminder.
