An estimated 3,000 people are dead across the two nations, with about 2,000 people deceased in Turkey and 1,050 in neighbouring Syria, which was also severely hit.
A second powerful 7.5 tremor shook Turkey later in the day as rescuers and devastated family members were searching the rubble for survivors.
