A popular footballer in his 30s tragically lost his life following a serious head injury sustained during an alleged assault.
A footballer in his 30s, James Hitchcock, who played as a goalkeeper for Barton Town FC, died in hospital after suffering serious head injuries sustained in an alleged assault on a night out. The incident occurred at York railway station at around 8.45pm on Sunday. British Transport Police arrested and charged 22-year-old Mckenzie Dicicco with murder and affray.
Hitchcock's club expressed their devastation and extended heartfelt thoughts to his wife April, their young son Freddie, and his family and friends. Club chairman Mark Gregory described Hitchcock as a 'popular but quiet' member of the first team. He joined Barton Town in May after being signed by manager Anthony Bowsley from Bridlington Town. Other clubs, including Bridlington Town and Pickering Town, also expressed their condolences and sorrow
