From the November 1969 issue of HOT ROD: How to 'trick-up' a Ford C-6 automatic transmission—make it live is the problem.
Although a relative newcomer to the high-performance transmission field, Winter's Transmission Service in York, Pennsylvania, is definitely not a Johnny-come-lately. Established as an automotive transmission-rebuilding firm owner in 1955, and with a previous background in engineering, Vaughn Winter quickly became the largest commercial rebuilder in Pennsylvania.
Engineers at Winter's felt that of all the popular heavy-duty transmissions on the market, the C-6 was most lacking in sound development in the performance field. It was felt that as the C-6 was basically the huskiest of all transmissions, it could well prove to be the most desirable under high-performance conditions. However, the C-6 has been limited in the performance field by lack of sound research and development.
For competition, in order to obtain the necessary band-apply rate, we must deactivate the scheduling valve and the accumulator. However, in doing this we are imposing these undesirable pressure surges and shock waves directly to the band. This causes erratic band application and can result in actually shearing off the band lining or delaminating the material. High-density lining overcomes this problem, but other problems exist which must be faced.
The full-competition trans they build features Winter's valve body turning C-6 into a stick trans. Stock size modified convertor is used with street machines. A 10-inch-type with stall speeds to 3600 rpm is also available. Therefore, a quick controllable means of applying the band to hold formidable horsepower without the penalty of band stretch or case breakage is needed.
They also discovered the absence of clutch-type C-6 transmissions or kits on the market. Since the C-6 durability is second to none, they felt that mating the two was a natural. By utilizing the proven drive components from their existing ClutchFlite and Clutch-Hydro kits, they built a clutch-type C-6. However, it had shortcomings in that their kit durability was not up to transmission durability.
