The Foreign Office has updated its guidance for Brits heading to Italy, with two key pieces of advice to avoid being hit with a heavy fine that could ruin a holiday
The Foreign Office has released guidelines for Brits planning a holiday to Italy, including those visiting Vatican City. The official gov.uk website carries crucial information for travellers, highlighting two essential areas which if ignored, could result in hefty fines, eating into your holiday spending money.
Under the segment 'laws and cultural differences', it highlights personal ID requirements and public transport regulations as areas that UK visitors should be keenly aware of. As per the warning, carrying a form of identification at all times is necessary, and in some cases, two pieces might be required.
They state: "You must always be able to show some form of ID. In most cases a copy of the photo page of your passport should be enough, but you may also be asked for a second form of photo ID. The police will normally ask for your full passport if you are stopped while driving." Additionally, the guidance strictly warns about validating tickets before using public transport to avoid steep fines that can go up to 500 euros. However, a savvy traveller who settles the fine on the spot will see it reduced to merely 50 euros.
The site says: "Officials patrol public transport and will issue an on-the-spot fine of 100 to 500 euros if you do not have a validated ticket."
