The terror alert for Brussels was raised to the highest level after two Swedes were killed in the shooting on Monday

The UK Foreign Office has issued fresh travel guidance for Belgium after two Swedish football fans were fatally shot in the street in Brussels on Monday. Police have since shot dead a suspected Tunisuan extremist accused of killing the two Swedes.

Previously the alert level stood at two, signifying an average threat level, while the alert level for the rest of the country was raised to three. The UK Foreign Office has warned Brits in the Brussels region to avoid all non-essential travel and to follow the guidance of local authorities. Amateur videos posted on social media of Monday’s attack showed a man wearing an orange fluorescent vest pull up on a scooter, take out a large weapon and open fire on passers by before chasing them into a building to gun them down. At a news conference held just before dawn on Tuesday, Prime Minister Alexander De Croo said: “Last night, three people left for what was supposed to be a wonderful soccer party. Two of them lost their lives in a brutal terrorist attack.

According to Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne, the suspect was denied asylum in 2019. He was known to police and had been suspected of involvement in human trafficking, living illegally in Belgium and of being a risk to state security.
