The UK Foreign Office has issued a warning to British tourists travelling to Europe, urging them to be vigilant in two countries that are popular for Christmas markets
British nationals planning to soak up the festive atmosphere at Europe's enchanting Christmas markets are being advised to remain vigilant as the Foreign Office issues a safety alert. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has highlighted a "high threat" level for UK tourists in Belgium and Germany due to potential terrorist attacks.
It urged travellers to "Stay aware of your surroundings at all times." On its website, the government agency warned: "Terrorists are very likely to try to carry out attacks in Germany." It also cautioned: "Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Belgium.", reports the Express. These cautions follow several "high profile" terrorist incidents in these countries. Notably, in October 2023, two Swedish citizens were fatally shot in central Brussels. In another incident in Brussels during 2022, one police officer was killed and another wounded in what was suspected to be a terrorist act.
