Nottingham Forest players Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi have both been a part of the Nigeria squad left stranded in a Libyan airport for 12 hours
Nottingham Forest players Ola Aina and Taiwo Awoniyi have been a part of the Nigeria squad which has chosen to boycott Tuesday night's game with Libya after the players were left stranded in a Libyan airport for up to 12 hours without any communication from their hosts.
The Nigerian squad, with Aina and Awoniyi joined by fellow Premier League stars Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi, saw their flight diverted to Al Abraq, around three hours from the players' hotel, and they were left to wait at the airport without any welcome party from their Libyan counterparts for 12 hours.
“The delegation of Nigeria to Tuesday’s 2025 AFCON qualifier against Libya still remained at the Al Abraq Airport 12 hours after landing in Libya. The chartered ValueJet aircraft was, strangely and in a dangerous manner, diverted to the small airport away from Benghazi just as the pilot was completing his approach to the Benghazi Airport. We understand the Al Abraq International Airport is only used for hajj operations.
