Perfect for a bank holiday
With King Charles III's Coronation approaching, there's plenty of talk of regal homestead and castles. The big guns such as Warwick Castle and Windsor castle, which will be hosting a live concert as part of the Coronation celebration, see thousands of tourists visit each year.
But it is time to shine a spotlight on castles that often get overlooked but are well worth a visit. And one of those is Cumbria's Bewcastle Castle near Carlisle. The ancient castle ruins are among the top 'hidden gem' castles in the country, according to a study of 155 castles. The buildings have been ranked according to their popularity with visitors.Digital marketing agency Tank analysed social media data and customer reviews on Google an TripAdvisor. Hever Castle in Kent takes the gold crown, just ahead of Arundel castle in West Sussex in second and Bewcastle Castle joins the royal party at number three.
The medieval ruins of Bewcastle sit on the site of a Roman fort, which was was once owned by Edward IV. Oliver Cromwell is credited for its destruction, but due to it being exposed, it is easily accessible to look around and explore.
