It started from humble beginning in the late 1800s
For decades, many will remember buying cakes and bread from Scott's Bakers, seeing their delivery vans driving across the city, or working at their massive factory on Dunnings Bridge Road in Netherton. Originally known as Thomas Scott and Sons, the small family business first opened in a tiny corner shop in Bootle before it grew into an empire.
"Just four years later Scott’s expanded their business interest still further by entering the grocery trade and their shops began to sell a wide range of consumer goods instead of just bread and confectionary. By 1937 the firm employed more than 700 people and had around 60 branches and a large wholesale trade throughout the North West, Cheshire and North Wales."
Making bread and cakes, Scott's vans could frequently be seen on our streets and the firm is also said to have made iced wedding cakes. Certain generations will also remember open days held at the Dunnings Bridge Road site factory and having a tour of the site. Fast-forward to the 1980s, you can see workers at the gates. But it was the decade prior that saw the last days of the Scott family running the firm.
