A celebration of life is taking place for 12-year-old Gavin Peterson, where a tree will be planted in his honor at a local park.
The West Haven boy died in July of suspected starvation, despite multiple reports from school workers to the state expressing concern about his well-being and safety. Rachel Reynolds , who worked as a student aide at Kanesville Elementary where Gavin attended, remembers him fondly.However, Reynolds also noticed a change in Gavin over time.“Because there was a big difference in that photo from the others. You could see that he was definitely more sad,” she said.
“It's haunted me since I first saw that, and it's something that I will never be able to forget,” she said. When asked if it looked like self-harm, Reynolds said, “To me, it looked like somebody who has a tick, just picking at their fingers, like when there's a skin tag or something, just pulling at it. And it was every single finger.”
