We had 20 something seniors, which is an awful lot for a small school , and he would let us make decisions and do things. He would give us more responsibility than most coaches today would. He wanted us to grow not only as players, but as young men too.
The two-point try, which came halfway in the fourth quarter, failed and Ashford lost a heartbreaker, 14-13, but Drake said letting the players make the decision on the extra point is still respected by his former players. “He was a giant in our community,” Klages said. “He was the head football coach from the time when I was in the third grade through my junior year, so growing up as a pee wee player, middle school player and later as a varsity player, he is all we know as the head football coach.”
Longtime coach Jim Robbins was an assistant coach with Drake for Ashford football teams from 1973-78 and said Drake was not only a players’ coach, but also good to assistants, allowing freedom to do their work.
