Benji Taylor, the former owner of popular Stockport bar Bask, is set to open a new music and events venue called The Underbank. Located in the former Syndikat space, The Underbank will host a diverse range of acts, including touring bands, local artists, DJs, comedians, poets, and more. Benji aims to create a special space that will become a hub for music and entertainment in Stockport.
A former owner of one of Greater Manchester's most beloved independent bars has announced a new music venue in Stockport . Benji Taylor, who previously worked as a music promoter, was at the helm of the speakeasy-style bar Bask in Stockport 's town centre from its opening in 2022 until last year when he announced he was stepping away from the business.
Benji, who is also behind the popular You Are Not Alone festival, has announced he will now be taking on a new venture - based in the former Syndikat space in Stockport's Underbanks. The Underbank will be a music and events venue with a focus on touring bands, local artists and DJs, and will also feature a varied line-up including comedians, poets, and other performers. Benji said the new venue will also feature quiz nights, exhibitions and 'big' match day specials for Stockport County FC fans. Teasing the arrival of The Underbank, which is due to open in March, Benji said he wants it to become something special and will feature 'some absolute belters' in the form of events and performers. Posting on Instagram, he wrote of the new venue: 'Expect to see touring bands, local artists, DJs, comedy, spoken word, quizzes, exhibitions, BIG County match days and a whole lot more. We're bringing in a heavy PA, incredible lights and one beautiful stage. It's really going to be something.' The venue will be located in the former Syndikat spot - which had run as a creative space since 2022. In the last few years, the location was used to host art exhibitions, events, live gigs, and even Stockport's first ever alternative market. Last year, the venue, which was originally a RBS bank until 2019, was also chosen as the home for a Joy Division mural playing homage to the band’s Unknown Pleasures album. Created by street artist Otto Schade, the mural celebrates the 1979 record with a nod to the artwork created by Peter Saville and a Vox Phantom VI guitar, which was played by Ian Curtis in the music video for the band’s biggest hit Love Will Tear Us Apart. The mural is now joined by a plaque from Stockport Music History, which recognises significant music moments of the town. The plaque was first unveiled by Peter Hook last May. Speaking about what is in the works for the new The Underbank venue, Benji said: 'The bar will be stocked with the finest worldwide and local beers, spirits, wines, AF tackle and some pretty tasty fresh ground coffee.' He added: 'The UK needs more venues, and we're here to stay. We'll be announcing the first set of events next week. Some absolute belters. See you for the opening party very soon x' You can follow The Underbank on Instagram here for more updates
