The Bexley-born former newsreader revealed on X she 'loathes' the way in which TV presenters 'mangle' the English language, which sometimes leads her to switch off.

The Bexley-born presenter expressed her feelings on X/ Twitter . READ MORE:Former BBC newsreader Jan Leeming has sparked debate after joking she is less likely to find work in television these days due to her received pronunciation accent.

She said: 'I loathe hearing our beautiful language mangled especially by on screen presenters. And that is gathering pace.' Leeming's comments come after several years of debate over the representation of regional accents on television as voices from the North of England called for UK media to feature more varied accents from all over the nation - while others lament what they consider a decline in 'The King's English'.

In 2019, he told Radio Times: 'When have you ever heard on a news programme somebody with a West Country accent? I can't think of a single person, and that's mad. Leeming's comments come after figures in the media including the BBC's Chris Mason argued for more regional accents to be represented on the airwaves and on screens

A self-confessed dog lover, O'Grady, who died last year at the age of 67, made a name for himself as the straight-talking Liverpudlian with a warm northern accent typical of the region. But as the regional accents are on the rise, Leeming appears to be onto something in how received pronunciation is on its way out.

Former Bond actor Sir Roger Moore argued in 2010 that his received pronunciation accent might have worked against him had he begun his career in the 21st Century Dr Laura Bailey, a senior lecturer in English Language and Linguistics at the University of Kent, told FEMAIL that 'true' received pronunciation is 'old fashioned' and is 'dying out' in society.
