Sir Andy Cooke, former chief constable of Lancashire and current His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, has been knighted for his services to policing and public service. He reflected on his four-decade career, highlighting his commitment to making communities safer and acknowledging the support of his colleagues and family.
A former Lancashire chief constable that has just received a knighthood, has talked about his 'life's work' in the force. Sir Andy Cooke, His Majesty’s Chief Inspector of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, says he was 'deeply humbled' to be recognised in the New Year Honours List. Sir Andy rose to the top of policing over four decades, tackling serious organised crime and leading major reforms. This time round, Sir Andy was given a knighthood for services to policing and public service.
In response, he said: “Making communities safer has been my life’s work, and this recognition is a testament to the incredible people I’ve been lucky enough to work with throughout my career.” In 1985, Sir Andy joined Merseyside Police and became the first commander of the Matrix team, which tackled gun crime and violence, the PA News Agency reports. Then, in 2008, he became assistant chief constable at Lancashire Constabulary, before returning to Merseyside in 2012 as deputy chief constable. In 2016, Sir Andy became chief constable of Merseyside and oversaw the force’s largest-ever reorganisation. He also worked nationally by leading efforts to combat serious organised crime and he played a key role in creating the UK’s first nationwide witness protection service. Now, he leads the Inspectorate of Constabulary and Fire & Rescue Services, which inspects and reports on police and fire services in England and Wales. On why he joined the force, Sir Andy said he was keen to 'make a difference' and that he has 'loved every role'. He added: “More recently, as His Majesty’s Chief Inspector, I’ve been able to help drive substantial improvements in police forces across England and Wales and fire and rescue services in England. “This is vitally important work, and I will continue to hold forces and services to the highest standards. “I would like to thank my colleagues who have supported me throughout my career and my family, who have always stood by my sid
