A former Chula Vista Councilwoman who admitted to stealing more than $200,000 from the federal and state governments was in San Diego Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon to learn her fate.Prosecutor Chandelle Boyce wanted to send Andrea Cardenas to six months behind bars, noting the councilwoman should be held to a higher standard as a politician.
The charges involved fraudulently obtaining a COVID-relief loan for $176,227 for a political consulting business with her brother, Jesus. They also pleaded guilty to taking more than $28,000 from the state Employment Development Department while both of them had jobs.He too pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two years of probation and 180 days in custody in a work furlough program and home detention.
