Plans to convert a historic church in Turton, Lancashire, into a gym, yoga studio, and physiotherapy clinic have been submitted to Blackburn with Darwen Council. The Grade II-listed Victorian former Edgworth Methodist Church could see a new lease on life as a fitness center, serving the local community.
A heritage-listed place of worship in a moorland village could be transformed into a fitness complex . Mrs. S Roberts has submitted an application to Blackburn with Darwen Council to convert the Grade II-listed Victorian former Edgworth Methodist Church in Bolton Road, Turton , into a new personal training gym, yoga studio , and physiotherapy treatment facility. The church, dating back to 1862 and funded by local philanthropist Mr.
James Barlow, has undergone significant internal changes in the late 20th century. While the building has been vacant recently, it remains in generally sound condition. The report states that the last known primary use was as a Methodist Church, but ancillary uses like playgroups and local meetings continued until its recent closure and subsequent sale. As there is no longer a local congregation to sustain religious worship, alternative uses are being explored to secure the long-term future of this important heritage building in a historic village setting. Investment is also crucial to prevent the building from falling into disrepair. The proposed change of use to a personal training gym is expected to be sustainable due to the large residential catchment area of Edgworth and surrounding areas. The applicant has already successfully provided personal training services from the nearby Barlow Institute in Edgworth village. The main facility will be the personal training gym, primarily for individuals and small groups (maximum 15 people), not a general gym accessible to members at any time. The yoga studio will accommodate a maximum of 25 people, with many attendees anticipated to be from the local area, walking to the building. The physiotherapy use will be ancillary to the main personal training gym and a minor element. The proposed operating hours are Monday to Friday: 6am to 8pm; Saturday and Sunday: 8am to 4pm; and Bank Holidays closed. The former vestry will be used as the main entrance/reception area and include a refreshment counter offering drinks and snacks. The main ground floor area, originally the main worship area, will be designated as the personal training space. The Nave will be screened off to create an office. The first floor will be slightly modified to create one open plan space for delivering yoga classes and sessions
