A former CIA employee and senior official at the White House National Security Council is charged with serving as a secret agent for South Korea's intelligence service, the US Justice Department says.
Sue Mi Terry, a foreign policy specialist who once worked for the CIA, was charged with serving as a secret agent for South Korea in exchange for luxury goods and other gifts.
Sue Mi Terry accepted luxury goods, including fancy handbags, and expensive dinners at sushi restaurants in exchange for advocating South Korean government positions during media appearances, sharing non-public information with intelligence officers, and facilitating access for South Korean officials to US government officials, according to an indictment filed in federal court in Manhattan.
The indictment contains surveillance camera images of Ms Terry awaiting or carrying a gift bag while the officers pay at Bottega Veneta and Louis Vuitton stores in Washington in 2019 and 2021, respectively. The conduct at issue occurred in the years after Ms Terry left the US government and worked at think tanks, where she became a prominent public policy voice on foreign affairs.
"In fact, she was a harsh critic of the South Korean government during times this indictment alleges that she was acting on its behalf," he said.Born in Seoul and raised in Virginia, Ms Terry served in the government from 2001 to 2011.
