Former footballer jailed over fatal hit and run in Fife
A former footballer has been jailed for two years over a fatal hit and run.
Smart was sentenced at the High Court in Stirling after being found guilty of causing death by careless driving.The floor layer was described by a witness as driving his employer's white Ford Transit van at "excessive speed" before "a loud bang". Police estimate the speed at between 20mph and 27mph. The court heard Smart left the scene eight-and-a-half minutes later, without waiting for the emergency services. He abandoned the van nearly four miles away in Kirkcaldy.Image source,Smart had originally faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving, but a jury found him guilty of the lesser charge of causing death by careless driving, for which the maximum possible jail term is five years.
