Mickey Coleman, a former GAA player, survives a 'widow maker' heart attack and reflects on his second chance at life, embracing constant challenges and the will that kept him alive.
“Like, I should be dead,” says the 44 year old, who is very much alive and kicking.
“I flatlined three times. It was no joke. Six and a half minutes they were working on me without oxygen. I should be at least brain dead anyway if nothing else. Session after session, season after season, moulding the fighter in him that he ultimately reckons kept him alive. “Six months after the heart attack I was doing 10kms. Flat out training. I went in to the cardiologist and said, ‘Can I do the New York marathon?’“I said, ‘I’m not saying I’m going to do it, but I’m asking you, can I do it?’
“When you are buying a defibrillator for the house and you are showing your eight year old child how to put pads on you if you drop dead — wee things you would never even think of. “We tend to worry about a lot of things, but when you are fighting for your life you are not worrying about too much — only surviving. You move on from that and things progress and then you get better and then you become complacent again.”He is “glad I got to see the last few years.” What if he hadn’t?
