The Shaker Class of 2024 includes students who were sixth-graders taught by Aisha Fraser when she was murdered by ex-husband and former judge Lance Mason, whom Fudge vouched for in a 2015 letter to the court seeking leniency on a felonious assault conviction for a previous domestic violence incident.

One of those sixth-graders at the time of Fraser’s death was Catherine Monroe, now a graduating senior, who launched an“The current selection of Marcia L. Fudge as the commencement speaker for the class of 2024 does not align with the values we uphold in Shaker Heights,” the“Ms. Fudge’s support for an individual found guilty of domestic violence against our beloved Aisha Fraser contradicts these principles,” Monroe continued.
Within three days, that petition had 932 signatures toward a foal of 1,000. And around 6 p.m. Friday , the school district sent out this announcement: School administration offered no further comment beyond the release, which added “the district is reviewing the commencement program and looks forward to celebrating the Class of 2024.”
