John Smith was Labour leader between 1992 and 1994. He died suddenly of a heart attack in 1994 and was succeeded by Tony Blair.Catherine Smith said: "It is a great honour to be appointed the Advocate General for Scotland and join the team of UK Government Law Officers. Catherine Smith has had a varied career as an advocate, specialising in criminal law in the early years and later working in public law, personal injury and clinical negligence.
She is also the chair and co-founder of the John Smith Centre for Public Service at the University of Glasgow.
