When Dinny here, a passionate singer, underwent surgery to remove thyroid cancer, she feared she would never be able to hold a note again.
LIFE CHANGING: Dinny feared she would never be able to talk again
Dinny, a 76-year-old mother of two from Birmingham, recalls how discovering a lump on her tongue, back in 2005, signalled the beginning of a lengthy process. Despite her background as a nurse, cancer never crossed her mind initially.Woman with cerebral palsy who feared she may never become a mum encourages others to adopt after welcoming son
Dinny hoped this would be the end of her health troubles, but her neck began to swell months later, resembling a puffed-out frog. Concerned, she returned to her doctor, who referred her to Solihull Hospital for an ultrasound, with the tests revealing nodules in her throat, leading to further investigations.
“I had what is known as a smile surgery, where you’re cut from one ear to the next so they could get in and remove the lumps. The surgery was a success but doctors had warned me that I could lose my voice and that I might have to have a tracheostomy,” she said. Motivated to give back and spread awareness, Dinny signed up for Cancer Research UK's Race for Life. In September 2019, she participated in her first 5K run alongside her daughter, Allison.
