A jury found a former RUC officer guilty of sexually abusing a teenage boy in the 1980s. The 91-year-old defendant, Albert Burns, was excused from trial due to dementia.

A jury at Belfast Crown Court found a former police officer guilty of sexually abusing a teenage boy in the 1980s. Albert Burns, a former CID officer in the RUC, was excused from attending the hearing due to dementia, which prevented him from understanding the trial. The 91-year-old, from Carnmoney Road in Newtownabbey, denied all seven charges of indecent assault which occurred between January 3, 1987 and January 4, 1989.

After deliberating for less than an hour, the jury unanimously found Burns guilty on all counts. The victim, aged 13 to 15 at the time, was abused in his bedroom and bathroom in County Antrim. He did not disclose the abuse as Burns threatened him. During a police interview, the victim recounted his experiences and expressed fear of his abuser. Burns denied the allegations in a 2020 interview with the PSNI, calling them 'lies' and 'made-up'. The defence argued for caution due to the lack of witnesses and forensic evidence, but the jury rejected Burns' claims of innocence
