A fire broke out at a former pub in Leigh, Greater Manchester, on Thursday evening, spreading to a flat above. Fire crews quickly extinguished the blaze, but the cause remains unknown. Police are assisting with the investigation.

A significant emergency response was mobilized to a former public house after a fire broke out on Thursday evening (January 30). Police and fire personnel were dispatched to the scene of the blaze at the former Hilton Park pub located on Leigh Road in Leigh , around 8:40 pm. It is believed that the fire extended to a flat situated above the ground floor. Visible plumes of smoke emanating from the windows of the building, currently closed, indicated the intensity of the fire.

The fire was swiftly contained and extinguished by approximately 9:25 pm. Officers from Greater Manchester Police were also present at the incident site. As of now, the origin of the fire remains undetermined. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service provided the following statement: 'We received a call at approximately 8:40 pm regarding a fire at a vacant building on Leigh Road, in Leigh. Three fire engines from Hindley, Atherton, and Leigh fire stations responded to the incident. Firefighters were equipped with breathing apparatus and utilized one hose reel to suppress the fire. Greater Manchester Police are also on the scene. The operation is currently being scaled down, and the fire was extinguished by 9:24 pm.
