Salmond had led the Scottish Nationalist Party for 20 years

It comes after the former SNP leader took ill while in North Macedonia, and is understood to have collapsed while delivering a speech earlier on Saturday.

He is widely credited with being the brains behind the rise of the SNP, alongside ex-leader Nicola Sturgeon, before becoming leader of the Alba party after the pair reportedly fell out. Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar said Mr Salmond was “a central figure in politics for over three decades”. “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time and on behalf of Scottish Labour I offer our sincere condolences to all who will be mourning his loss.

He added: “While we had opposing political views, he was a towering figure in Scottish politics which he dominated for many years.Alex Salmond during a debate following the Government’s defeat on their fishing policy in 1995.
