Tory MP Johnny Mercer joined the protesters in front of Parliament today, where former translators for the British Army held banners and signs up. The protesters demanded protection for citizens of Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover.

The former Tory veterans minister could be jailed over his refusal to name whistleblowers who told him about alleged murders by UK special forces in Afghanistan.

During a tense exchange during his evidence at the Royal Courts of Justice in March Mr Mercer repeatedly refused to hand over the name of an officer and 'multiple' others who he said had told him there had been unlawful shootings. In the order, the chairman said the consequences of failing to comply without reasonable excuse would be 'a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment and/or a fine.'

'He gave his word to the whistleblowers that their identity would be protected. The information that they gave Mr Mercer has already been passed by him to the inquiry.'
