Mr Hurren was chairman of Styal Football Club and a trustee at Manchester's Science and Industry Museum

Ben Hurren, a former shorthand typist who rose to become one of the most powerful executives in the UK newspaper printing industry, has died aged 87.

He was made managing director in 1990 after the Telegraph entered into a joint venture agreement with Guardian Media Group to print its titles, including the Guardian and the Manchester Evening News.Born in Walthomstow, north London, Mr Hurren won a scholarship at Sir George Monoux Grammar School before completing his National Service in the RAF.

By 1974 he had moved to Wilmslow, Cheshire, with his wife and family after being appointed Northern Circulation Manager before being made Deputy Northern General Manager of the media group in 1980. The short lived dispute over Shah scrapping a 'closed shop' agreement amongst his workforce routed the NGA and was said to have an enormous significance for the UK print industry as a whole over the next decade. As a result the Telegraph began to look for a suitable Northern site for its own printing operations and Mr Hurren delivered the Trafford Park Printers complex on a former green field site in 1986 after working 18 hour days for two years.
