Former US vice-president Mike Pence has declared himself a candidate in the 2024 Republican race for the White House, setting up a challenge to former president Donald Trump.
The staunch social conservative has increasingly distanced himself from his former boss Donald Trump
Mr Pence will launch his campaign with a video and a speech in the early nominating state of Iowa on Wednesday, three sources familiar with the situation told Reuters last week. The growing number of contenders could throw up roadblocks for Mr Trump's main rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, party members and strategists said.North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum is also planning to enter the race on Wednesday, according to a person familiar with Mr Burgum's plans.
That would allow the former president to clinch the nomination, just as he did in similar circumstances in 2016. Others are barely registering at all. Mr Christie has just 1 per cent backing him, as does Senator Scott of South Carolina, while former Arkansas governor Asa Hutchinson, who declared in April, has 0 per cent.Mr Pence has warned against the growing populist tide in the party, and advisers see him as the only traditional, Reagan-style conservative in the race.
