Chinese paleontologists have discovered a new tyrannosaur species, Asiatyrannus xui, dating back to the Late Cretaceous period.
A Chinese paleontological research team has discovered a new species of tyrannosaur which lived approximately 72 to 66 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period. The fossil comes with a skull, which is almost complete, tail vertebrae, and hind limb bones. Researchers believe that this is the first-ever deep-snouted tyrannosaur discovered in Southern China.
What distinguishes these species from the rest is their colossal body size and deep snout. The researchers revealed that the skull ofand other large-bodied tyrannosaurines which were in similar growth stages. have varying skull proportions and body sizes. It suggests that these species might have occupied distinct ecological niches. While the origins of these kinds of species remain uncertain, previous research suggests that Laramidia could potentially be the origin of the tyrannosaur lineage.migrated or dispersed to the rest of Asia much later. However, researchers still consider this conjecture and emphasize that there is no definitive conclusion yet.
