The Silk Road was one of the first and biggest online drug marketplaces.
Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht has been pardoned by Donald Trump Donald Trump has announced a ‘full and unconditional’ pardon for Ross Ulbricht, the creator of the dark web drug market known as The Silk Road. Ulbricht was convicted in 2015 and sentenced to life in prison for running the underground marketplace, which saw over $200 million of illicit trade conducted using bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies.
Court documents from the FBI suggest the site had at least a million users, although the real figures are unknown and could be much higher. During his trial, a judge told Ulbricht he was ‘no better a person than any other drug dealer’, and warned of severe consequences for any copycats he may have inspired. But following his conviction, there has been a strong push for his release by the Libertarian Party, who have called for the decriminalisation and legalisation of all drugs.
