Four Barrick Gold employees have been charged and detained in Mali by the junta-controlled government, which is seeking additional revenue from mining companies. Barrick denies the charges and is committed to resolving the disputes with the government.
Four Barrick Gold employees have reportedly been charged and detained pending trial in Mali as the junta-controlled government continues its strong-armed approach to securing more money from mining companies. Barrick said in a press release it refuted the charges but would keep working with the Mali an government to settle its ongoing disputes. The company did not outline the details of the charges.
Barrick reported on September 30 it had reached an agreement with the Mali government to settle the existing claims and tax disputes. However, the agreement fell through, with the junta in October accusing Barrick of failing to abide by the commitments it had made a month prior. Barrick denies the allegations. The Malian government is reportedly seeking at least US$512 million in alleged outstanding taxes and dividends from Barrick's operations.
