The small aircraft fell off radar a short time later and a frantic search for survivors began. Two weeks after the crash, on 16 May, a search team found the plane in a thick patch of the rainforest and recovered the bodies of the three adults on board, but the small children were nowhere to be found.
Colombia’s army flew 150 soldiers with dogs into the area to join the search mission. Dozens of volunteers from Indigenous tribes also helped. Mr Petro faced criticism last month when he mistakenly announced that the children had been found on Twitter., where they are being given further medical treatment. The president said he had spoken to the children’s grandfather who said, “the mother jungle returned them”.
The four children belong to the Huitoto indigenous group and members of their community hoped that their knowledge of fruits and jungle survival skills would give them a better chance of remaining alive.
