So nice it happened twice. Rickie Fowler and Xander Schauffele each shot an 8-under-62, the lowest single-round scores in USOpen history.
After that 62 on Thursday morning, we need to embrace the reality that a guy who was one of the game’s brightest stars just a few years ago and then went into the wilderness has found his way back out — by playing like he did Thursday, which ironically did include him playing his second shot on No. 8 through a bridge and tree after an errant tee shot. He birdied the hole, one of 10 birdies he had in this round.
Fowler was alone with the lowest round in U.S. Open history Thursday for all of about 15 minutes. Yes, the first day of the 2023 U.S. Open produced a pair of 62s in the morning wave, defying the traditional narrative of this being the toughest test in golf. And so now we’ll see the blowback, that Los Angeles Country Club has set up to be too kind to the greatest players in the world, with commentators wondering where all the penal rough and scorched greens are.
But Fowler and Schauffele hit 10 of 13 fairways, and the former made it to 15 greens in regulation. The latter made it to 16. They played good golf, so they should be rewarded with a good score! And no one else ended the morning within five shots of them, with 52 players in the morning wave over par. LACC is gettable, but you have to hit your landing spots. If you don’t, you’re in trouble and going to shoot a big score. If you do, you have a chance to do what two players did Thursday.
Six players have shot 63 at the U.S. Open. Tommy Fleetwood was the last golfer to do so at Shinnecock Hills in 2018.This year’s U.S. Open is being played at Los Angeles Country Club North Course. It is the first major championship held at this venue.
