FOX10 News visits the site of the Clotilda wreckage
On Saturday afternoon, a group of travelers boarded a boat to the site of the Clotilda wreckage. The tours take place monthly through Africatown Freedom Tours and Historic Blakeley Park.“Emotions range from being happy to being angry to being disappointed to just being emotionally taken aback when we end up at this sight,” said storyteller and Africatown descendant Jacquline Williams.to take visitors to the wreckage once a month.
“It was sobering to be in that area knowing that that’s where our ancestors come from and just thinking about the experiences that they had while they were on the Clotilda,” added Priscilla McCants-Walker. The wreckage was discovered in 2019 by local journalist Ben Raines. Since then, sonar imagery has been used to capture the wreckage at the bottom of the river. Historians, divers, authors and journalists have visited the location.
