The following day, the man spoke to his mum while the carer was absent. She gripped his arm, and told him: "When you are not here this person bullies me and makes me do things." The man believed his mother was speaking in a moment of clarity and believed what she said.
The video footage, also played in court, showed the carer hitting the woman with a slipper and shouting at her. A physical examination uncovered bruises - including a shoe-shaped mark on her buttock, although the woman could not say how it had happened. Mr Clarke told the court the woman does not recall much of what happened to her, but her son feels anger and has lost sleep thinking about what happened to his mum. "It has taken its toll on him that he wasn't able to look after her", he said.Sharon Watson, defending, provided testimonials to the court which spoke of a kind and professional woman who had worked in the care profession for many years.
