The major disruption could severely impact the whole weekend
July 26, 2024 8:34 amFrance’s high-speed rail network has been targeted in an arson attack, causing major travel disruption hours before the opening ceremony ofState-owned rail operator SNCF said “malicious acts” were seeking to paralyse its high-speed system by setting fires at installations along the line connecting Paris and surrounding travel hubs.
In a statement the rail company said: “Last night, the SNCF was victim of several acts of vandalism on the Atlantic, Northern and Eastern high-speed lines.It also asked travellers to “postpone their trip and not go to the station”. France’s sports minister Amélie Oudéa-Castera condemned the attack, calling it “completely appalling” and branding the disruption “a sort of coordinated sabotage”.She also confirmed that the incidents would cause major travel disruption for the rest of Friday and into the weekend.
“We will assess the impacts on travelers, athletes, and ensure the proper transport of all delegations to the competition sites,” she told CNN. The attacks come hours before the Olympic torch-carrying relay concludes and the Opening Ceremony on the River Seine begins.
